Hello and welcome to my travel Blog! I created this Blog in 2014 when I decided to island hop around the Socrates, back packing and solo. 2015 I toured parts of Italy with a couple more of the Greek islands thrown in. 2016 I did some of the beautiful Croatian island and this year I continued exploring more of the Greek islands on the eastern side. 2018 takes me further.... seawhathappens

Evaluating ….

Its a difficult one … low points … very few .. sleeping on a concrete floor? Nah, had my towel, it was 27 degrees and I woke up to a great sun rise! Kipping on a couple of deck chairs for 7 hours? Nah, again the sun rise was amazing and the deck chairs were quite comfy! One comes to mind … on my journey back to the airport … on the metro … a guy (big built) invaded my space.. I mean pressed his body right up to mine. I pushed him out of the way and moved to another area … he then came over to me and tried to do the same (metro was standing room only). At my stop he stood in front of me and the door … I pushed past him to get off … he then followed me to the next connection which was the airport connection. He persistently walked in front of me. Eventually he went… Its the only time I felt uncomfortable! Highs? Far too many to talk about …. Acropolis, Sunsets and sun rises, food, sea and not forgetting the people… Oh and frozen yogurt!!! I have met some really interesting people along the way. People from all over the globe. Best Island? Should really say Santorini for its beauty and romance but am going to say Folegandros …yeah, I had nowhere to stay but it was the prettiest and the most traditional of the 7 islands I visited. 7 down and about 150 to go. Watch this space!

How I feel now? This has been the most amazing experience of my life so far …. simply because it was something that I did on my own and purely for me!!! I have a huge smile inside of my head which will stay with me forever! Yes, thousands have done it and done a whole lot more but this is only the start for me … I am 54 yrs old and that certainly isn’t going to stop me … it may drive me further if anything!

I hope that I have inspired others … you don’t have to be brave (or crazy as some would say of me) just have a sense of adventure and get going … then seawhathappens.

Athens – Breath Taking!

Not sure where to start … so much to write about but you really need to experience it all to get a flavour of the city and obviously the famous sights and monuments. The Acropolis being my main WOW! You find it hard not to imagine yourself living out the whole Greek history with it there in front of you. There is still restoration going on … emulating the statues and marble workmanship. A visit to the Museum was next …. a lot of the archeology remains … a glass path has been built over it so you can view some of the remains in and around the museum.

Next was a visit to the archeology centre and the gardens. I took so many photos but have tried to give you a little flavour in just a few.

My day ended with Moussaka and a glass of red wine …. Oh, in the Acropolis district the streets are lined with yogurt bars …. I didn’t know which way to turn. Guess what I had for lunch. No more food shots though!

I have a half day left here in Athens. On my way back from sight seeing ( via the metro) I discovered a shopping mall. Time for some commercialisation now as I soon will be back in civilisation. Will evaluate in tomorrows blog!!

Athens – Final Journey

After a 7 hour ferry ride from Milos and quite a challenging train and metro trip to my hotel I eventually arrived at 9.30 pm. I must admit, once I saw that bed … 5 days sleeping rough and in a tent …. it certainly makes you appreciative. Katirini, the hotel owner warned me about pick pockets in Athens. She said that since the illegal immigrants entered, Athens hasn’t been safe. She told me to wear my purse belt under my clothes!! Well, that’s what I will do …. Gonna hit the Acropolis tomorrow which is a metro ride away plus the museum. I wont do my usual walk about though.

The sunset photo was taken from the ferry as we approached Athens. Right, gonna hit that bed now.

Last Full Day In Milos

Have been here, well, 3 and half nights here at the campsite in Milos. To be honest I am grateful for it! I really thought that I would be getting on that ferry earlier than planned!

I have met quite a few interesting people along the way too. Apologies for the food photos! Fruit was lunch and the huge Nacos salad (which I could not finish was dinner). I washed that down with some local beer with one of the waiters here … me and him have been discussing music over the last few days. I have inspired him and him me .,,, to the point of me Shazaming his music and downloading it. Greek music I may add! Am sticking to the theme here.

Nothing more to add now other than tomorrow I am sailing back up to Athens. Going to take around 7 hours so lets hope those winds are not too bad! See you in Athens for my last leg of the journey.

Milos – Our Friend In World War 1

As the title says, Milos sheltered the English and French fleet at Adamantas. It was used as a naval base against the attack of the German submarines. But in World War 2 the island was occupied by the Germans in 1941. But 4 years later it was liberated! This, I learnt from an old sea dog!!!

Milos actually means “sheep” and the Romans conquered the island in the 2nd Century BC!

Its only around 14 miles E to W and 6 miles N to S.

The sunset photo I took last night! Some of you may have seen it as I had to share with friends/ family. Far too beautiful to see alone. The other photos are what I took today exploring. I went off the beaten track again and got lost …. easy finding my way back now … just climb to the top and look to see where you have been. Enjoy! My last full day here tomorrow before I sail back to Athens on Tuesday.

Happy Camping At Milos

Yay! I have a little tent (see pic). Awesome hey? After sleeping rough for the last 2 nights this is going to be sheer luxury. It sure makes you appreciate what and who is around you, this whole experience certainly has.

I stopped around the site all day today on the sun lounger and in and around the pool as I was totally whacked because of the last 2 nights but ready to explore tomorrow. Will start by getting onto a bus and going into town. The photos today are of the site and as you can see its pretty good.

They have a restaurant on site with very good traditional food and at a reasonable price too. Shower rooms are not bad and they have separate laundry facilities. Only one negative for me and thats the toilets! I don’t mind sharing, its not that …. they are those ” Squat and drop” toilets … yeah, you got it!!! (no photo of those).

Island No. 7 – Milos

Only arrived here at 1.30 am and there was no one with rooms. I spotted a mini bus with ” Campsite” written across it so I made a bee line for it. “no room in any of tents, sorry” the Driver said. ” Can I just sleep anywhere on your site then please” I asked giving him the puppy dog eyes. “Yes if you want, will see if I can get you a bed in the morning”. So I am waiting. I slept on the floor at the side of the swimming pool …. yep, even better. Watch this space! The photo was my wake up view and there is one of the pool.

Under The Stars In Folegandros

Yep, just me and a couple of deck chairs facing the sea! Cant be bad really can it … I didn’t get a great deal of sleep but I was safe! One thing about this island (and I would say most of these little Greek islands) is that you do get a sense of security. Crime is minimum here…. in fact apart from the Port Police who generally make sure you get on and off safely there has been no other Police presence.

My next hop is going to be a challenging one. As I write this I am in the Port waiting for my 10.30 pm ferry to take me into Milos. It gets in at 1.15 am and I have no accommodation! It could just be another night under the stars again. Will keep you posted.
